Choosing the Right Plumbing System
Today’s homeowners usually take the time to educate themselves more than any past generations have when it comes to finding the right products for their home. Access to the Internet, the availability of how-to manuals, and vast number of home improvement stores have given homeowners easy access to all of this information they need to install and maintain their plumbing properly. It may, in fact, be too much access to too much information sometimes. So, when it is time to choose a plumbing system for your home, you may not know where to turn. Plumbing, however, is a necessity, so it is important to choose the right plumbing system for your home.
Installation
In the past, choices for plumbing pipes were limited to one or two options. Today, there are many options that offer reliable and hassle-free plumbing to homeowners. Whether or not you plan on doing your own plumbing installation, you need to understand how the pipes and plumbing system will be installed. For example, copper pipe plumbing systems require the pipes to be soldered together with a torch. Using a torch can be a fire hazard if you do not use it properly. Therefore, if you are not comfortable with using a torch to install your plumbing, you might want to consider using a different type of pipe or hiring a pro to help you out.
Fortunately, the more readily available materials that can be used for plumbing systems today do not require the use of torches. The more modern plumbing systems do, however, require the use of chemicals like chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC). Therefore, you still need to exercise caution when installing these pipes. At the same time, many of these systems are one-step systems, which makes it a much easier and faster process to install these pipes when compared to installing copper piping systems with a torch.
Standing the Test of Time
Another important factor to consider when selecting a plumbing system is how long it will last. Plumbing systems are not items you want to be replacing once a year or so. In fact, most plumbing systems are expected to last for many years. Therefore, careful consideration should be given to your choice in order to be certain you choose the right system.
Keep in mind that there are problems, however, that can affect your plumbing system negatively. If this happens, you may have to be replace your system sooner than usual. Problems such as corrosive water or soil can cause damage to plumbing systems made out of metal. Repeated failures of the plumbing systems in these instances can cause a system to last only a couple of years before needing to be replaced.
Water Quality
Since your family will be bathing in the water and drinking the water that comes out of your home plumbing system, you also want to know how the system will affect the drinking quality of the water. Certain types of pipes can be corroded by water, which can in turn cause water contamination. Other types of pipe systems, like PVC piping, do not tend to corrode, which can mean the quality of the water is safer.
Cost
The type of materials used in the plumbing system can directly affect the cost of installation. Cost, however, is one of the factors that needs to be taken into consideration when deciding what type of plumbing system to install.
Making a Decision
There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of plumbing material and system. In order to choose the right system for you and your family, you need to educate yourself on these advantages and disadvantages. Make a list of the pros and cons for using each type of material and seriously weigh the options available to you before making a final decision. What may be right for your friend may not be right for you, so while talking to friends and family members about their plumbing experiences may help, it should not be the deciding factor for you. You may find a particular plumbing system to be more expensive, but it may have other advantages that you are willing to pay a little more to have.
